The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. The United States is proud to support Kenya’s leadership in the global HIV/AIDS response. PEPFAR provides service delivery and technical assistance in Kenya to maximize the quality, coverage, and impact of the national HIV/AIDS response. Working together with the Government of Kenya, PEPFAR is aligning investments to scale up interventions that are most effective in the areas and populations with the highest burden of HIV/AIDS–in line with PEPFAR 3.0. Kenya is participating in the Accelerating Children’s HIV/AIDS Treatment Initiative, a two-year effort that will enable 300,000 more children living with HIV/AIDS globally to receive life-saving antiretroviral treatment (ART). Specific priorities include the following:

  • Increasing the number of new patients on ART
  • Scaling up HIV prevention services including HIV testing and counseling, voluntary medical male circumcision, and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) by supporting Option B+
  • Strengthening the social welfare system and workforce, including community structures to support orphans and vulnerable children
  • Implementing cross-cutting activities for HIV/AIDS-related surveillance, including implementing more strategic monitoring and evaluation across programs and strengthening national health information systems to improve management and use of data
  • Supporting the national health system, including increasing human resources for health and strengthening supply chain management
